New energy vehicles refer to the use of unconventional vehicle fuels as the power source (or the use of conventional vehicle fuels, the use of new vehicle power devices), integrated vehicle power control and drive advanced technology, the formation of advanced technical principles, with New technology, new structure of the car. New energy vehicles include pure electric vehicles, extended-range electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles, fuel cell electric vehicles, and hydrogen engine vehicles.

In November 2020, the General Office of the State Council issued the New Energy Vehicle Industry Development Plan (2021-2035), calling for the in-depth implementation of the national strategy for the development of new energy vehicles, promoting the high-quality and sustainable development of China's new energy vehicle industry, and accelerating the construction of an automotive power.
In 2021, the annual output of new energy vehicles was 3.677 million, an increase of 152.5 percent over the previous year, ending three consecutive years of negative growth. According to the latest statistics of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, the production and sales of new energy vehicles in China completed 7.058 million and 6.887 million respectively in 2022, up 96.9 percent and 93.4 percent respectively from the same period last year, ranking first in the world for eight consecutive years.
On February 28, 2023, the National Bureau of Statistics issued the "the People's Republic of China 2022 National Economic and Social Development Statistical Bulletin", showing that the output of new energy vehicles in 2022 was 7.003 million, an increase of 90.5 percent over the previous year. [44] As of July 3, 2023, China's new energy vehicle production reached 20 million. [50] In the first half of 2023, there were 3.611 million new energy vehicles, an increase of 35.0. As of the end of September 2023, there were 18.21 million new energy vehicles.
